Psyc 402 Hybrid Live & Online Format
I know there is some confusion about what this new Hybrid Live & Online format means.
You can read about the new class formats here
When it was designed back in April, the idea was to have 1/2 the students attending in person on Tuesday while the other half was on Zoom.
On Thursday, the other half would come in person and the first group would attend via Zoom.
This was a way to meet the social distancing rules, but still allow us to have in-person education and start getting people back on campus.
This is not a purely online class. You may not need to attend every class meeting in person, but the expectation is you would attend most of them.
A lot has changed since then: the strict social distancing rules have been relaxed. We are now allowed to go to full capacity, and so there's no need to split the class into two groups - you can all attend simultaneously.
However, we are in the middle of a Delta COVID surge, and the campus has new masking, vaccination and testing rules. We are still a week away from the campus reopening, and it's possible the rules might change again.
Please help me out by taking a survey. I'll be sending you an invitation email so you can create a login and get started.
- Please look for an invitation email from me
- Once you receive the email, you will set up a PIN code for the class website (the class website is separate from Cougar Courses)

Update and FAQ
- Q: are there group projects? Why is coming in-person useful?
A: there are not group projects in the traditional sense. However, there are a number of assignments where it's much easier to work with other students and being in person to get help from the professor. This is not a lab class, but it has some lab-like components which is why it's helpful for it to be in-person.
- Q: what is the class setup and capacity?
A: The Classroom SBSB 2107 has 39 seats. Seats are about 6 feet apart front to back, but about 3-4 feet apart side-to-side
Here's a picture of the classroom:

- Q: how many students are enrolled, will it be crowded?
A: the 1pm section has 32 students enrolled (82% capacity)
the 4pm section has 22 students enrolled (56% capacity)
However, a number of students are planning to attend online at first, so I believe we will be at no more than 50% capacity to start
- Q: What will class be like?
A:
- On days you attend online, it will be using Zoom (meeting links will be in Cougar Courses).
- On days you attend in person, you have options - you will need to log into Zoom to use the text chat feature at least once per week, (that's part of participation credit) but I will also be projecting my lecture slides onscreen, so you may not need to have Zoom onscreen the entire time. This is the first time I've taught in this format, and we all have some learning and experimenting to do about what works best.
